For underwater research activities it is of highest importance to know the exact location of the data collection. As conventional wireless communication systems are inoperable underwater, we will use the optical feedback of Scubo's on-board cameras in order to compute our location. Moreover, we will construct a rough 3D model of our surrounding to get an improved orientation.
Scubo will dive in a very sensitive surrounding. Therefore we need to avoid any kind of collision with other objects at all costs. In order to do so we will use the mentioned 3D map that gives us knowledge about the current position of Scubo and the distance to surrounding objects.
The electronics assembly has to be accessed easily to make adjustments and repairs. To achieve this we will use flaps which are closed with lever releases. To dive deeply we need to have a high surface pressure on the sealing.
Scubo should be able to dive at least 25m deep. The entire body with the lockable flaps has to sustain a pressure of 2.5 bar. For emergencies a moisture sensor will detect when water is leaking in and the system will immediately initiate the emersion process.
Thanks to the symmetric arrangement of the propulsion units all the directions of motion can be decoupled and superposed. With an IMU (internal measurement unit) we will measure the accelerations in every degree of freedom thereby Scubo can stabilize itself in moving water.
